The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has concluded plans to convene another National Executive Council meeting following the failure of the government to fulfil its promise to release the withheld salaries of members of the union.
The President of the union, Muhammed Ibrahim, disclosed this during an interview with our correspondent in Abuja, noting that the move followed a seven-day warning strike embarked upon by university workers a few weeks ago.
SSANU and its sister union, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions commenced a seven-day nationwide strike two weeks ago to protest the refusal of the Federal Government to release their four-month salaries withheld by the Federal Government in 2021 because they embarked on a strike.
Former president Muhammadu Buhari withheld the salaries, insisting on the principle of ‘No work, no pay.’
However, the current administration of President Bola Tinubu ordered the release of the withheld salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, who were also affected by the past administration’s ‘no work, no pay’ stance.
Speaking to our correspondent, the SSANU leader said, “The government hasn’t paid the money, and there’s no further information apart from the assurances earlier given. The leadership will soon meet and intimate you with our next line of action.”
On whether a date has been fixed yet for the meeting, Ibrahim added, “Not yet.”
