Terhile Timothy Achinya, a mechanical engineering student at Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic, Lafia, has reportedly been beaten to death by unidentified military personnel, prompting widespread outrage within the Polytechnic community. The tragic incident, which occurred after Achinya and other students were allegedly accused of cult involvement, has led to calls for justice. The institution's Acting Rector, Dr. Nurudeen Mu’azu Maifata, has appealed for calm as investigations unfold.The President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comr. Jacob John Mutuwa, provided details on the circumstances leading to Achinya’s death. According to Mutuwa, the situation began when a student, Samuel Ejembi, reported to soldiers in Lafia about alleged cult activities by some students. Acting on the tip, the soldiers raided an entertainment center near the Polytechnic, arresting both Ejembi and the accused students.Tragically, Achinya reportedly died during interrogation, with claims of torture by the military personnel involved. His body was later deposited at Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia.Mutuwa expressed deep sadness over Achinya’s death, lamenting that had students been allowed to use the accommodation built by former Governor Tanko Almakura, such incidents might have been avoided. Despite the tragedy, he commended the students for their peaceful response and reassured them that legal action has been initiated against those responsible.In a related development, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the incident and demanded swift justice. The NANS Coordinator for Zone C, Comr. Daniel Friday Egga, expressed gratitude to the Polytechnic's management and SUG leadership for their handling of the matter. He further urged military authorities to investigate the soldiers allegedly involved, who are believed to be from the 123 Special Force Battalion.The call for justice continues as both the Polytechnic community and NANS push for accountability in the wake of Achinya's death.
