A woman in her 50s who was shot dead at home on a leafy residential street has been named locally - as a 79-year-old pensioner is arrested on suspicion of murder.
Neighbours have revealed that Jackie Rutter was the woman that was killed in the incident which left her with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Emergency services were called to an address in the Moreton area of the Wirral, Merseyside, at around 1.45am on Sunday where they arrested a 79-year-old man.
Police confirmed that a woman was pronounced dead at the scene with an injury to her chest, consistent with a gun wound. The man, who is known to the victim, remains in custody for questioning.
Residents told how they heard 'bangs', which they initially believed were fireworks, ringing out in the middle of the night.
One resident, who didn't wish to be named, said she'd heard a shot around 1.05am.
'At first I thought it was a firework,' she said.
'But I went out later on to get some bread and milk from the shop and saw all the police so I knew something serous had happened.

'I know the woman who was killed and she’d lived at the address with her dad for years.'
She said she saw a man 'being taken away in handcuffs' who was protesting 'I didn't do it'.
'It’s weird that someone I know has been shot on this road because it’s usually so quiet,' she added.
Pictures from the scene show a large cordon that has been set up at the address on Meadowbrook Road and officers have been providing reassurance to residents.
Forensic officers were seen carrying out evidence searches outside a property on the road.
