Only ten per cent of Europeans believe Ukraine can still defeat Russia and a 'compromise settlement' is seen as the most likely outcome, poll finds

Just one in ten Europeans think Ukraine can still defeat Russia and a 'compromise settlement' is seen as the most likely outcome, poll has found.

Of the 12 countries surveyed, ten believe Russia has a greater chance of winning the war, the YouGov study found.

The two that have faith in Ukraine being victorious are Poland and Portugal - with the former only very marginally backing their geographical neighbour over Russia.

The country that has the least faith in Ukraine is Greece with only a tiny proportion of respondents saying that the country will win the war.

Hungary, which also borders the war-torn nation, isn't far behind, according to the EU-wide poll called Wars and Elections: How European leaders can maintain public support for Ukraine.

According to the poll, Hungary believes more than any other of the 12 countries that Russia will come out on top.

As reported by the Guardian, the authors of the poll report found that on the second anniversary of Russia'a invasion of Ukraine, Europeans are not in a 'heroic mood', or even optimistic about the situation.

Despite this, it is said that Europeans' commitment to preventing a Russian victory had not moved.

However, another poll suggests that Europeans might not be as in touch with their moral loyalty to Ukraine as they once were.

The vast majority of people surveyed in the 12-country poll believe that the war-locked countries should come to a peace deal - rather than Ukraine pushing for victory.

Co-author of the report, Mark Leonard, of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), which commissioned the poll, told the Guardian that most Europeans are 'desperate to prevent a Russian victory' but would push for merely providing aid as they doubt Ukraine's military capability.

This is in stark contrast to the general notion around Europe at the beginning of the war, when countries such as the UK were so adamant on stopping Putin in his tracks, they were prepared to boycott Russian exports. 

The UK was so unwavering on Ukraine having an outright victory against the Russian aggressors that they knowingly allowed gas and oil prices to skyrocket due to blocking out Russia - all in a message of solidarity with the victims of the war.

Another YouGov poll on the same European countries but this time on the topic of Donald Trump getting elected in the upcoming US elections, shows a very strong correlation between the countries that believe Ukraine should settle and the countries that back the presidential candidate.

This is unsurprising due to the promises Trump has made over the course of the war. 

Last year, Trump was asked for his specific plan to bring the war to an end in an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo.

He said that it would boil down to his good relationships with Volodymyr Zelensky Vladimir Putin.

Trump said: 'I know Zelensky very well, I know Putin very well - even better - and I had a very good relationship with both of them.'

The presidential hopeful said he would tell Zelensky: 'No more, you gotta make a deal.'

He said he would then tell Putin: 'If you don’t make a deal, we’re gonna give them a lot. We’re gonna give more than they ever got.'

There is also a strong correlation between the European countries that believe Ukraine has a fighting chance to outright win the war and those who support Trump. 

On the whole, the less faith the country has in Ukraine, the more support they have for Trump - and presumably, his war-ending promises.
