Obasa Sends Message To Lagosians As Nationwide Protest Enters Day 2

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has commended residents following the peaceful atmosphere in the state as the nationwide protest enters its second day.

Naija News reports that Nigerians commenced a nationwide protest on Thursday, August 1, to decry the policies of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration, which has plunged the nation into economic hardship.

The protest, which began yesterday, August 1st, is set to run for ten days, ending August 10th.

However, while there were chaotic situations in other states, there was relative peace in Lagos yesterday and today.

In a statement released on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, Obasa commended the orderly behaviour of the protesters in Lagos, the South-West region, and other parts of Nigeria.

He particularly lauded the citizens for listening to rational and wise counsel.

The Speaker noted that the protesters largely followed the legal guidelines, enabling residents to carry on with their daily activities without disruption.

The statement reads: “The conduct of Lagosians since the nationwide protest began on Thursday is worthy of emulation. While many residents heeded the voice of reason and stayed away, those who decided to publicly express their grievances did so within the confines of the law.

“These grievances have been noted and I am convinced that the state and federal governments are not folding their arms in relation to making Lagos and Nigeria greater than we are currently witnessing.

“President Bola Tinubu is championing policies that ultimately have the tendency to move Nigeria to the level we all anticipate. In the meantime, he has taken steps to mitigate the challenge of food shortage upon which the protest is hinged.

“In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with the support of the House of Assembly under my speakership, has provided roadmaps for more developments aside sustaining standards.”

The Speaker remarked that in addition to reaching all areas of the state, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has persistently pursued initiatives aimed at alleviating hunger, particularly through the Sunday Markets, which offer a 25 per cent discount on essential food items and are set to be reinstated soon.

“The state government has made further promises to continue extending the dividends of democracy to residents. The Medical Outreach programme through which many enjoy free treatments, the free delivery for pregnant women and the slash in fares on government transportation facilities are some other actions being taken by the government,” Obasa said.

The Speaker guaranteed that the House would work closely with the executive branch to maintain the well-being of residents under the administration while emphasizing that the legislative branch would remain a beacon of hope for the people of Lagos.

The Speaker, after successfully convincing residents of Agege to refrain from joining the protest, expressed gratitude towards law enforcement officials for their professional conduct in upholding law and order.

Additionally, he commended religious leaders, traditional and community leaders, development associations, market leaders, and artisans for their cooperation and backing of the government.
