NSCDC Ramps Up Security For Critical Infrastructure Ahead Of Nationwide Protest
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a directive for heightened security measures to protect the nation's critical infrastructure in anticipation of a forthcoming nationwide protest. The order was announced by NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi on Friday, July 26, through a statement by the Corps' Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi.In the wake of the planned protests, Audi emphasized the NSCDC’s pivotal role in safeguarding essential national assets. "As the lead agency tasked with the protection of critical infrastructure, we are committed to ensuring that all state commandants, provosts of colleges, and heads of various formations are on high alert," Audi said.The NSCDC's readiness is part of a broader strategy to prevent any disruptions and maintain public order amid what is described as a challenging economic climate. Audi noted that the current economic difficulties are not unique to Nigeria but are part of a global trend influenced by inflation, food shortages, and climate-related issues.While acknowledging the constitutional right of Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests, Audi highlighted concerns about the potential for such demonstrations to be exploited by criminals and non-state actors. He assured that the NSCDC, in collaboration with other security agencies, is working to prevent any form of lawlessness or public disturbance."Our primary focus remains the protection of lives and property. We will not allow any disruptive elements to undermine the stability of our nation under the guise of protests," Audi added.
