Lagos State Bans Overnight Stays At Construction Sites Following Fatal Collapse
In response to the tragic collapse of a two-storey building in the Maryland area of Lagos, which resulted in the deaths of five construction workers, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has implemented stringent new regulations.Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LASBCA, announced an immediate ban on overnight stays at construction sites. This directive, which aims to prevent future tragedies, prohibits anyone, particularly laborers, from sleeping on site after working hours, especially during the night.LASBCA officials will now carry out night inspections to ensure compliance with this new regulation. Additionally, the agency has established specific construction hours from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday, excluding Sundays.Property owners and developers are also mandated to employ only qualified professionals—including structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as architects—for their building projects. Non-compliance with these requirements could result in the sealing and possible removal of the construction site.The agency's measures are designed to enhance safety standards within the building construction industry. LASBCA will also conduct material testing on the collapsed structure to investigate the cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
