Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has urged Nigerians to unite against misgovernance and poor leadership. Speaking at an event organized by the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy (NACJD) to honor the heroes of the 2023 election, Obi emphasized the importance of national unity.At the event, held in Abuja, Obi dispelled the misconception that the Yoruba tribe harbors animosity towards people from the South-East. Represented by Labour Party governorship aspirant Valentine Ozigbo, Obi received the 2024 Courageous Citizen Award. The event also recognized former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese Rev. Matthew Kukah in various categories.Obi clarified that his involvement in the 2023 elections was not driven by religious or ethnic motives. "The 2023 election wasn’t a Christian or Igbo project; it was a Nigerian project," he said, noting the significant voter turnout as a testament to the widespread desire for change.Reflecting on the unity displayed during the election, Obi stated, “It was a time Nigerians united and spoke with one voice regardless of tribe, tongue, or religion.” He lauded the efforts of elder statesmen like Obasanjo and Adebanjo, who stood firm in their support for a new Nigeria.Obi addressed and refuted the narrative of ethnic hatred between the Yoruba and Igbo, emphasizing that people from diverse backgrounds showed overwhelming support. “There is nothing like the Yoruba hating Igbo people. Numerous people from different ethnicities thronged the pit to show their support,” he said. He also honored those who sacrificed, including those who lost their lives, in the pursuit of a better Nigeria.The Labour Party leader concluded by calling for collective action against bad governance. "It's high time Nigerians united and spoke with one voice against misgovernance and bad leadership," he declared.
