Keir Starmer jibed at Angela Rayner over her fondness for Venom cocktails today as they tried to quash rumours of tensions.

Launching Labour's local election campaign in the West Midlands, Sir Keir referred to his deputy as 'Ange' and wished her a happy 44th birthday.

After she introduced him as someone who would 'always get his round in', Sir Keir warned the audience that they should never accept one of her 'favourite drinks'.

Ms Rayner has previously spoken of her habit of serving Venom - a combination of vodka, Southern Comfort, Blue WKD and orange juice - at parties.

She related how one local councillor had ended up 'curled up in the dog's bed' as a result, while another visitor had to be taken home to recover.

At the launch today, Ms Rayner attacked Rishi Sunak as 'the political equivalent of that friend from back home who says he will get the first round in if you pay for the taxi and yet when you get to the bar he is nowhere to be seen'.

Bottle of vodka

Bottle of Southern Comfort

Ten bottles of Blue WKD

Litre of pure orange juice

She contrasted that with Sir Keir who did not shirk his round.

Taking to the stage, Sir Keir then said: 'Some advice for all of you if you're thinking of getting in a round with Ange - don't be tempted by her favourite drink, the venom cocktail, or you will live to regret it.'

Talking to comedian Matt Forde for his Political Party podcast last year, Ms Rayner said: 'I do a cocktail called Venom. I don't know if any of you have had it but it's lethal.

'I invited my youngest kid's teacher from primary school, he came and had to take his wife home because she'd had some Venom.'

Pressed on what was in the cocktail, the Ashton-under-Lyne MP said: 'Venom, it's a bottle of vodka - Absolut I prefer - a bottle of Southern Comfort, ten bottles of Blue WKD and a litre of pure orange juice.

'And honestly, if you're ever having a barbecue at home, get that out, everyone will have a good time.

'One of my local councillors, I found her curled up in the dog's bed with the dog after Venom, had to get her home. It's really tasty, it's really, really nice. It's like an alcopop.'
