Biggest selling vinyl of the century revealed - can YOU guess who topped the charts with 40million copies sold worldwide? (and no, it's not Taylor Swift!)

Here's one chart not topped by Taylor Swift - Fleetwood Mac's album Rumours has been named number one with 40million copies snapped up worldwide.

The 1977 LP featuring hits such as Dreams, The Chain, Don't Stop and You Can Go Your Own way is the bestselling classic-era record on vinyl this century.

Some 280,000 of its 40million sales since being released have come since the turn of the millennium, according to the Official Charts Company.

They have revealed a new top ten of the most popular vinyl albums this century which were released in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

Second place goes to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon - originally released four years before Rumours - while US grunge band Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind is placed third.

Nirvana - fronted by Kurt Cobain, who killed himself in April 1994, have two entries in the top ten, with Unplugged In New York ninth.

Britpop group Oasis are also represented twice, with (What's The Story) Morning Glory from 1995 in fourth and the previous year's debut Definitely Maybe eighth.

Other bestsellers include Queen's Greatest Hits fifth, Bob Marley and the Wailers' best-of compilation Legend sixth and the Stone Roses' eponymous debut - released 35 years ago today - seventh.

David Bowie's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, released in 1972, was deemed the ninth bestseller.

The rundown was compiled by the Official Charts Company to mark Greatest Hits Radio's Vinyl Revival Day, with tracks from each album heavily featured on the station's playlist today.

The station is also marking Cash For Kids Day which this year sees the charity of the same name raising money to combat 'holiday hunger'.

DJs including Ken Bruce - who defected to Greatest Hits Radio from BBC Radio 2 last year - will be discussing their own vinyl memories during today's shows.

He said: 'I’m a huge admirer of Fleetwood Mac and am not remotely surprised to see Rumours at the top of this chart – it’s one of their finest.

'And I’ve had a rummage through all those crates of vinyl in the attic chez Bruce and I’m looking forward to turning back the clock a few years for Greatest Hits Radio’s Vinyl Revival and dropping that needle on some of my favourite tracks.

'Do tune in and if you can please donate to Cash For Kids – it’s for a very special cause.'

Gennaro Castaldo, from UK record labels association, the BPI, said today: 'One thing driving the vinyl revival are fans who are much younger and more diverse and are discovering classic albums for the first time – they stream for their daily music needs and then love to collect their favourite LPs on physical format.

'Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and other iconic recordings with timeless appeal including by The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, may be around 50 years old now or more.

'But they are new to this audience and remain hugely popular as perennial best sellers alongside each year’s heavyweight new releases from Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and other global stars.

'Fans love the tactile experience of vinyl and the art and ritual that surrounds it - the warmth of its immersive sound, the iconic sleeve designs and deluxe presentation, and perhaps most of all the authentic connection that it gives them to human artistry and the artists they love.'

Rumours won the Album of the Year prize at the 1978 Grammy Awards and four years ago Rolling Stone magazine ranked it seventh in their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The band's line-up at the time of recording it included singer Stevie Nicks and keyboardist Christine McVie - who died aged 79 in November 2022 - as well as guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, bass player John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood.

The record's success came despite turbulence in the band's personal lives, with the McVies divorcing after eight years and a rocky on-off relationship between Nicks and Buckingham. 

Vinyl sales have been surging in recent years - with members of Generation Z, especially young women, proving especially enthusiastic.

Some 6.5million LPs on vinyl were bought across the UK last year, making it the 16th year in a row to see growth - with modern-day stars such as Swift, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar and Harry Styles credited for the boom.

Seven of last year's ten most popular vinyl LPs were released in 2023, led by 1989 (Taylor's Version) and Speak Now (Taylor's Version) by Swift, Did You Know There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd by Lana Del Rey and Guts by Olivia Rodrigo.

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours came fifth in that chart, with The Dark Side Of The Moon in sixth. 

More than 250,000 vinyl records were sold in the final week of 2023 - a record for a seven-day period this century – with 6.5million bought throughout last year, according to trade body the BPI.

And half of all vinyl sales last year were by people aged between 16 and 24, with Gen Z women tending to spend a little more than men.

HMV's boss Phil Halliday has previously told MailOnline Gen Z vinyl fans shopping for modern acts was a cause for optimism as his retail firm recently reopened its famous Oxford Street branch in central London.

Official figures also showed the number of independent record shops in Britain has hit a 10-year high, with 461 indie record shops across the country - 122 more than a decade ago.
