Alton Towers theme park has made the 'difficult decision' to shutter its highly rated on-site spa.

The Alton Towers Spa, which boasted a phenomenal 4.0 rating and 400 reviews on Tripadvisor, officially shut its doors for good on December 31, 2023.

The popular facility, which provided customers with an Edwarnian sauna, multi-sensory showers, and several treatments and packages, first opened its doors 21 years ago after being transformed from a Pirate's Lagoon.

It is yet to be confirmed what will replace the facility at the resort.

The popular spa (pictured) had been open for 21 years, and boasted a stellar 4.0 rating on TripAdvisor

An Alton Towers spokesperson said: 'After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to close the Spa located on-site.

'This was a difficult decision but one we feel is essential for the future growth and development of the Resort.

'Our top priority has been supporting our employees at the Spa during this time, including with advice on career opportunities available across the Resort.

'We are also in the process of contacting guests with bookings in 2024 to discuss alternative options.

'We sincerely appreciate the loyalty and support of our valued guests and dedicated colleagues throughout the years.'

Prior to its closure, the spa received rave reviews, accumulating more than 200 excellent ratings on TripAdvisor.

One customer names Mitch called the facilities 'clean', 'lovely' and 'brilliant' as recently as November.

He added: 'I would also like to mention how professional Sarah and Lucy were who did mine and my partners massage.

'They were really amazing and we will definitely back thanks to how great the staff.'

Spa customers previously raved about the spa, leaving 200 excellent reviews, often praising the clean facilities and 'wonderfu' staff

On November 5, 2023, the theme park also removed their fairground Retro Squad rides. This included the shuttering of attractions such as, Twistatron (pictured left), Spinjam (pictured right) and Funk 'n' Fly

Laura also echoed a similar sentiment, quipping: 'We went to the spa for my partners 50th bday.

'The staff are lovely, everything was spotlessly clean and the treatments were amazing!!! Defo recommend and would so back!!'

In September, Sarah shared that she felt 'truly pampered' after her treatments at the spa, stating that she would definitely be returning.

However, the spa is not the only part of Alton Towers to have closed in recent months.

On November 5, 2023 the resort got rid of their fairground Retro Squad rides, which included attractions such as, Twistatron, Spinjam and Funk 'n' Fly.

Festive breaks at the resort are still available for purchase until January 7, according to Birmingham Live.

From Sunday onwards, Alton Towers will be shut until it reopens for a brand new season on March 16.
